    Problem deploying a Sample Configuration

    Hi,

The current environment I have is, VQMS Server on a Windows 2003 OS and Windows XP host machine with MVS2005R2 and the Surgient Windows Agent. I was following the installation instructions guide, and came across setting up the default pool, adding IP range and pointing it to the host. For some reason, the host was added in the list by default, and I am not able to see the add host icon in the console. I continued to deploy a sample configuration by selecting the Surgient Sample (MVS), which was unsuccessful. It gives the following reason.

00170003 No asset source of type Surgient.Platform.Types.VirtualMachine has been contributed to pool 2. Asset source constraints in place: <N/A>. Contact your pool administrator.
Can someone please help me fix this problem?

    Thanks,

    Praveen Vangari.

I think you are probably looking at a different Resources view than the steps detailed in the Install Guide.  After installing the host agent, the host will be listed in the Hosts view of the Resources area of the Management Console, but the host will not be a member of a Pool (the Pool column is empty.)  The host will not be listed in the Hosts tab when you select the Default Pool in the Pools view.  The Install Guide covers how to add a host to a Pool via the Pools view: click Default Pool, then click Hosts tab, then click the [+] icon to Add a Host to the Pool.  Alternatively, you can add a host to a Pool from the Hosts view you are seeing: click the Host, then click the server icon with the downward arrow to Assign the Host to a Pool.

The reason that you see this issue is that you do not have any assign resources to a pool (Default Pool).

The host that you see from the Host view is from the installation of the Windows Agent that will manage the pooled virtual machines and network resources.  The next step of your installations should be:

     1. Create your Network Resources (Resources->Network Resources Tab)

       a. IP Address Range

       b. MAC Address Range

       c. VLAN ID Range

    2.  Assign the Network Resources to the Default Pool

    3. Assign Host to Default Pool (Resources->Hosts Tab).  Click on the icon that says: Assign Host to Pool

    4. After you have successfully pooled the host, you will see the Pooled RAM and Pooled VMs from the Pool Views

    5. Now you can attempt to deploy your Application Configuration (Library Tab)

It seems I was looking at the wrong screen when I did the pool setup. Let me follow the Install guide again and see if it works this time.

I realized my mistake, During the pool configuration under hosts tab, I missed the below part of the console screen where it shows all the details of the host. That was the reason I did not find the Add host to pool icon the first time.

Surgient samples are, I guess, dummy images. Just place holders. They won't contain any OS. You will surely  fail if you deploy them.

Re: Problem deploying a Sample Configuration

No, the Surgient Sample contains a copy of Darn Small Linux (DSL) complete with a Linux GUI desktop and DHCP network access. The VMDK and VHDs images in the sample provide a small writable area for the OS. If you assemble the Sample manually without both the LiveCD (SurgientSample.iso) or the virtual disk, it will not work.
