    ESX3 Host Agent Question

I'm installing the ESX 3 host agent.  After doing the rpm command, I see this:

    Next execute "/usr/surgient/linuxagent/bin/esx-make-init-script.sh"
Then start the agent by executing "/etc/init.d/surgientagent start"

The docs (page 38) tells me after issuing the install command (step 3) to run the "surgientagent start" command (step 4).  However, the instructions above tell me to run the esx-make-init-script.sh.

What do I want to do?

The esx-make-init-script.sh command is only required if you are upgrading from an older agent.  You do not need to run it.  It doesn't hurt anything if you do run it.

This command restores the /etc/init.d/surgientagent script that the former old RPM would accidentally remove even on upgrade.  If you are curious or you want to double-check that the surgientagent script will run at boot time, issue the command:

    # chkconfig --list surgientagent

    The output should match:

    surgientagent   0:off   1:off   2:on    3:on    4:on    5:on    6:off

The documentation is generally a guideline.  In some places it's literal in other places it's conceptual.  For instance we don't document every potential warning during the installation process so consider discrepancies as needed.

In this particular case as dbabbitt writes, that message only applies to upgrading from an earlier version of the Surgient ESX Agent.

If you have further questions, of course will free to ask them here.

     Thanks!
